Empowering women to make healthy life choices

Let’s talk empowerment… May 21, 2007

holding_hands.jpgI was watching the View recently and the women were candidly talking about the feminist movement. Now, I’m a Generation X’er so I did not bear personal witness to the women’s liberation movement. I’m a huge advocate of women taking charge of their lives while still maintaining who they are. I want to see my fellow sisters be strong, yet female, courageous in their beliefs, yet compassionate, and teaching the world that there IS a better way, while being respectful of others.

I know of many women who have allowed men or family members control their lives. You have to look inside yourself to figure out if that way of life makes you truly happy. I remember being a fresh college graduate and following my boyfriend to Chicago. I took the first job that was offered to me, retail management trainee. I quickly discovered that retail was not for me (God bless those that do it). I randomly met a chiropractor at an aerobics class who introduced me to the world of chiropractic. What an amazing profession, I thought. You can help people heal without having to invade their bodies with needles, drugs or surgery! I quickly realized that chiropractic was my true calling and I enrolled into Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa. My boyfriend, at the time, thought I was a little crazy for jumping into it so fast but recognized that was what I needed to do. Six months later, he proposed and he moved out to Iowa to be with me…

I want to see my fellow women make decisions for themselves that make them happy. How many of us are people pleasers? I’m guilty. But we can be helpful to others and empathetic without sacrificing our true happiness and inner integrity. Once you find your path, you should find the “real joy” and all should follow. Doesn’t that sound easy? Yeah, right. Then reality sets in and we realize that there are many outside factors that hold us from our dreams/ life course. They can range from financial shortages, lack of spousal support, having kids, ailing parents, and sometimes plain fear. The last category has always been a problem for me and difficult to admit or define. In order to get past that you have to take action. Remember the old saying, “If there’s a will, there’s a way.”

I have been reading a lot of self-help books lately. They all have a common theme. Picture where you want to go, embrace it and then start moving towards it. Wouldn’t it be great to just visualize it and then it magically appeared. Well, that would take out all the fun of actually going forth and making it happen and being able to have ownership of that. I want you all, my fellow sisters, to search deep in your souls and ask your self if you are truly happy with the way your life is headed. If you answer with a resounding yes, then GREAT!!!! If there is more hesitation in your answer, I suggest taking a time out whether it’s 10 minutes or an hour and begin a self discovery process where you can find your inner passions. You can do this by journaling, praying, visualizing, or any other host of avenues that feel right to you. I’m on this path with you. I’ve just begun to discover it myself and I’m truly excited because I believe that whatever my dreams are, I have the POWER to make it happen. Isn’t life absolutely amazing?

I enjoyed this. The feminine is still a subculture in our society. I have seen ‘feminist’ become a dirty word, a laughingstock even. Are we kidding? Listening to teenage girls talk about sex and looking at what has developed as “liberated” is a horror show. The opposite of what was intended. No goddess content!
